Greece offers breathtaking scenery, culture and a wealth of history. Together with its amazing cuisine, Mediterranean climate and relaxed work ethic, it’s not surprising that many Brits are now living in Greece. Moving to Greece really is an exciting prospect. Below we share some top tips for moving to Greece as a UK citizen.
Documentation
As a UK citizen, you are entitled to visit Greece for up to three months. If you are wanting to live and work in Greece, you will need a Registration Certificate. This can be obtained at the Aliens’ Bureau, located in the larger Greek cities. This remains valid for an unlimited time.
Currency and cash
The local currency is the Euro, so it’s an easy currency to understand, especially if you travel across Europe. What you must learn to do, however, is carry cash on you: don’t rely upon credit and debit cards, as most local businesses, cafes and taxis do not accept them. The good news is that there are lots of cash machines.
The language of Greece
You’ll find that the Greeks are pretty fluent in both German and English, so communication rarely seems to be a problem. However, the locals do appreciate it when you make the effort to learn some basic words and phrases. Enrolling in a beginner’s Greek course before you relocate is a good idea!
Choose your removal company with care
When planning to move to a Greek island, make sure that your chosen removal company is fully insured. Their service for removals to Greece should be fully explained and should ideally include a Door to Door service, making your journey as stress-free as possible. Ideally, they should offer a no obligation quote, so you know you are getting a good deal.
The working day
The Greek working day somewhat differs to that of the UK. Shops are open from 9am to 9pm, with a midday closure between 2.30 and 5pm on Tuesdays and Thursdays. On the other days of the week, the opening times are from 9 to 3. Shops are closed on a Sunday, apart from tourist locations. This pattern is followed for most other places of work and Greek-run businesses.
The Greek climate
Mediterranean summers can be as hot as 40°C in the south of the country, which is one of the many reasons that people from the UK choose to relocate there. Even the winter is pretty mild, although it is cooler in the north of Greece.
